Reactions/Views of the Germans
On August 13, 1961, citizens of Berlin woke up to the appalling news of a wall being built that permanently separated their city. Shock, outrage, and confusion were strongly felt by the people. They were confused and helpless for they had no clue how long this new obstacle would last. Many people attempted to cross the border, but were killed in the process. Although the building of the wall had helped prevent the Cold War from advancing, it did not please the minds of the Berliners; they felt trapped, like pawns in the Cold War.
